Norman Mclean was the Free Church catechist who attended Lord Napier's commission at Castlebay on 26 May 1883. Norman came from North Uist (which is a presbyterian island, rather than Barra's predominant Roman Catholic population) and was married to Mary in 1881. They had three children, Farquhar (10), Geroge (8) and Margaret (5). In 1871, he was a lodger at 21 South Boisdale, with another 10 people in the house of the Ferguson family. In the 1891 census, the family have moved to Barbreck, Inishail, Kilchrenan, Argyll (near Taynuilt). Norman has returned to North Uist in 1901, living with his son Farquhar (age erroneously shown as 51, but more likely 31) and Maggie Jane (26).
Norman Mclean passed away on 30 November 1906 at the age of 70. He was the son of John Maclean; his mother's first name is unknown, but her maiden name was Dingwall. Norman died of a brain haemorrhage and respiratory problems. He lived at Malaclete (Sollas), North Uist.
