Thomas Jenkins was a fish-curer from Burghead in Morayshire, who gave evidence to the Napier Commission at Castlebay on 26 May 1883. We find him in the 1881 census for Duffus, Moray (where Burghead is situated) at 70 Grant Street. He is employing 7 men and 3 boys, and is married to Ann. They have three young children, Thomas (9), Ann S (6) and Virginia G D (1). A decade earlier, Thomas Jenkins is a fisherman, employing 3 M 6 Sh (3 men 6 boys?), and has one child; William Jenkins does not occur in the 1881 census, although he should be only 13 by then.
We trace Thomas in the 1851 census as one of 9 children, born to John and Isabel Jenkin of Burghead. His siblings were James, Alex J, Margaret, Isabella, Robert, Willi, George and Francis, varying in ages from 3 to 23.
In 1891, we find Thomas Jenkins at 89 Grant Street, but now married to Charlotte, who is 5 years his junior. They have a large family, comprising of Wm D (22), John (13), V G D (11), H (9), and J T (7). By 1901, the couple remain at the same address, with their children Virginia G D and Horations (19) with them in the house.
Thomas Jenkins passed away on 31 October 1920 at the age of 82 of senile decay and gallstones. He was the widower of Ann Shaw Dick (who died in 1886 aged 43) and Charlotte Tyre (who died in 1911 aged 67). His parents are quoted as John and Isabella nee Glass.
