Thomas Ross gave evidence to the Napier Commission at Castlebay on 26 May 1883. He was a fishcurer out of Burghead, Moray and we find him in the 1881 census as living at 1 Granary Street in Duffus. Thomas, aged 55, is married to Ann S, and has seven children, varying in ages from 4 to 21. In the 1891 census, his name is misspelt as "Riss". The family has moved to 69 Granary Street, Duffus, and four of the children turn up on the census. The eldest, Catherine, is designated as a "dater" in the census transcripts on Ancestry, but we can safely assume that to be meaning "daughter". In 1901, we find Thomas and Ann at 82 Granary Street, with only one of their children at home. Going back in time, the 1861 census finds the family at 30 Grant Street, with five children (aged 1 to 9).
It is worth noting that Burghead is in the parish of Duffus. Thomas is quoted as a cooper and fishcurer.
Thomas Ross died on 1 January 1905 at the age of 79. He had been suffering from heart disease for an indeterminate period. Thomas was survived by his wife Ann, who passed away in 1914 at the age of 83 in Burghead.
