Angus Macfie was the first witness to give evidence to Lord Napier's Commission at Torlum, Benbecula on 29 May 1883. In 1881, he was married to Margaret, and we find his name spelt correctly as Macphee. He is living at Caolas or Flodda Island off Benbecula with his children Catherine, Mary and Lachlen, as well as a granddaughter Mary. The 1871 census records his age incorrectly as 77. At that time, his sons Hector and John are also present in the house, showing an age span of 8 to 22 for his five offspring. One census earlier, we see Angus and Peggy (the abbreviated form of Margaret) with two older children, Catharine and Archibald. Angus is a grasskeeper at Teoravay in Benbecula. In 1851, Angus lives at Liniclate; although his wife is absent, his three oldest children, Catherine, Archibald and Hector are shown.
Angus died on 6 August 1884 at the age of 68 at Howmore in South Uist, of general debility. He was the son of Donald and Ann, nee Maccormack. His wife Margaret appears to have pre-deceased Angus.
An alternative curriculum vitae runs as follows:
Angus born 1812, son of Neil Macphee, 1788-1863, and Catherine MacCormack, 1788-1858. Married in 1841 to Catherine Macleod,1827-65, daughter of Hector Macleod. There was a second marriage to Peggy Wilson 1822-82. Angus emigrated in 1884 with the younger members of his family to Ontario, settling in the Wapella region. Information re above can be found in Marriages Catholic Archives, Ardkenneth, St Michael's nand emigration in 'Register of Emigrants from the Western Isles of Scotland 1750-1900 volume 2. Isles of South Uist and Benbecula, Part 2 1840 -1900' by Bill Lawson.
